Multi-model (combined) carriages

Organization of a cargo transportation from one point to another is a quite difficult and laborious process. Before forwarding of the freight to the point of destination specialists of a shipping company have to work out a route schedule taking in account conditions of transportation as well as requirements of the consignor concerning the terms of delivery and the freight charge. It is often necessary to combine different means of transport to minimize the time of cargo transportation. If more then two means of transport are used such carriage is called multi-modal or combined.

Distinctive features of a multi-model carriage

It is possible to organize a multi-modal carriage by using different means of transport alternatively. If a consignor does not bring the cargo to the transport by own strength such carriage can be modified as a multi-modal. If the cargo will be transported by sea, railway or air, it is supposed to be brought to a transport terminal by a special truck. Consequently, in this case a multi-modal scheme is used. Just because of necessity to bring the cargo every time to a transport terminal (except of simple truck transportation) we talk about the principle of a multi-modal carriage. During all period of transportation the freight is accompanied by one shipping document. All the necessary connections are carried out without a personal participation of the freight consignor.

Multi-modal carriage services

Apart from cargo transportation itself, some additional operations with the cargo can be carried out during a multi-modal carriage. The first stage of a multi-modal carriage is cargo handling. The freight is loaded on a truck and delivered to the airport, railway station or port. During its transportation the freight is liable to pass through customs formalities. It is being forwarded inside terminals, stored in warehouses and forwarded to the next point.

Intercontinental and interregional carriages

It is obviously that carriages to different continents can not be carried out without complicated multi-modal schemes of cargo forwarding. Use of different means of transport gives an opportunity to reduce terms of transportation significantly and consequently enables the recipient to receive the freight as soon as possible. Interregional carriages can be also carried out in significantly reduced terms due to multi-modal schemes of cargo forwarding especially when quickness was one of the basic requirements of the consignor while concluding an association agreement.

Quickness or low prize?

Multi-modal schemes of cargo forwarding often enable to reduce the time of transportation. But there is a reverse side of this advantage - the price for reduction of the delivery time is not always attractive. Nevertheless, many forwarders do their best to offer a multi-modal carriage with the most reasonable transport route as well as at the best for the consignor price. Exactly the consignor has to decide, whether to forward the freight by one mood of transport and to spend more time waiting for it, or to pay in excess for a multi-modal carriage and to have the freight at the destination point in the shortest possible time.
